Applied Psychology:

How to be Happy All The Blasted Time

Weight Management Isn't About Food

Weight Loss, Emotions, and Coca Cola.

Let’s back it up 50 years. When, believe it or not you whippersnappers, we had soft drink machines in the schools and rode school buses instead of walking ten miles through the snow. There were no diet drinks. We had dessert after meals.

And there was no weight loss industry.  MysteryShrink, while pretty nutty, isn’t nutty enough to take on explaining the difference. We’re all tired of blaming McDonald’s, watching television, working parents, the whole bag of “reasons.” These reasons are brought up to point out what we humans do when we don’t have answers. Yes, we just make stuff up.  Then we make stupid changes completely ignoring the fact that the changes we enforce have nothing to do with the problem. If not allowing the band to sell chocolate was the problem, or the PTA to have bake sales really mattered, why didn’t they matter 50 years ago?

That said. Let’s get to the culprit. Hold up there! I just saw you thinking I was about to tell you how to lose weight. Not happening. You know how to lose weight and have since the third grade. Most people are actually successful when they first diet. It’s the keeping it off that’s the killer. I’m not going to insult your intelligence explaining how that happens either.

What MysteryShrink will do, is ask you to look beyond the hype, to look at over-eating as just one learned method of dealing with the problems we all have in managing anxiety.

Other popular methods are over-drinking, over-talking, over-gardening, over-running, over-studying, and on and on. You can flip the list. When anxious some of us as calmed by under-drinking (folks all worked up about other’s drinking), under-talking, under-gardening, under-exercising, under-studying. See how it works? Some methods just have more visible or harmful results than others.

Here goes: we humans are anxious creatures, when we are anxious, we do stuff to lower our anxiety. When what we do works, when the act lowers our anxiety, we are going to use that method often. When we are highly anxious our brain is flooded with the urge to find that anxiety reducer. Not because we’re stupid. Because we are anxious.  When we are anxious we want relief now.

MysteryShrink’s weight management articles will be about anxiety.

Because when you are not anxious, you know what to do.

What are some ways to work on better managing your anxiety around food? That MysteryShrink will give you in articles to follow. Next: Take a Chance with Food!

Challenge those stupid, pushy emotions!
